The work in this exhibition is about absence and presence. Much of my life has been trying to get to New Orleans or trying to leave New Orleans. As a child in the French Quarter, a graduate student uptown, or an adult in the Bywater, my relationship to this magnificent city is complicated. Life and relationships here are beautiful, ephemeral, and have a sharpness to them. A lightness and darkness that will take your breath away, often in the same instance.
The work in this exhibition is about beauty, poetry, and a life lived with what is left. I recently experienced a fire in my studio in Maine. The work in the show is from before and after the fire. I remember walking into my studio on North Derbigny after Katrina and wondering if I would ever be able to make art again. In December 2005 I showed work that I made before and after the storm (rescued and cleaned pieces from my studio and new work I made at Studio Inferno). “Bewitched, Bothered, and Barnacled Am I, New and rescued work by Christopher Scott Brumfield” opened at Marigny Perks and like the rest of my wounded city, I began again. I hope that I will always be able to make art again, no matter what happens. Thank you for spending time with my work. I hope for you peace in life, kindness in thought, and rest when needed. Love and Light, Christopherblue
