International Cat Day 2026

Happy International Cat Day. As you might expect, I have a few things to say. There’s estimated to be around 1 billion domesticated/feral/stray cats on planet earth of which half are thought to be stray or feral.

(there are also 100 million wildcats, but that’s for another time)

This is a many billion-dollar problem across the globe. America coming in #1 with the most cats and the most stray/feral cats. As with many of the problems that humans gave birth to, this one has complicated solutions and requires quick action. Trap, neuter, and release programs, elimination of feral cat populations in sensitive ecological niches where they prove deadly to the native Flora and Fauna, and controlling the diseases associated these populations. We love our cats and we need to do more. We also need to expect our governments to do more.

How do we pay for all this? Stop fighting wars and stop basing our economies on war. Tax every single billionaire out of existence.  Nationalize Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and all AI. Most of these things were developed through American government grants and development, they belong to us. Nationalize every vaccine and medicine that was created by the private sector with public funds in the United States. Release all nonviolent criminals from any incarceration. Stop policing demonstrations and peaceful protests. Stop giving corporate subsidies. Ban data centers.

I can hear you saying now that none of these things are possible. That’s not true. Anything is possible. People want change. People want healthcare. People want love and lives and jobs and meaningful existences. The billionaires don’t want any of us to have those things, remember that.

Saving the planet is a complicated, multifaceted, and dynamic problem. One of the steps is to address the feral populations of domesticated animals that humans are responsible for.  The solutions to the current crisis are complicated. But I believe with all my heart and soul that we are up to the task.

Rain Lilies in The Bywater

The ancestors of these rain lilies were found in old pots in my yard in Bywater, New Orleans. When I purchased that house in 2004, the yard was full of fossils, empty pedestals, and a leaky pond.  I brought many treasures from that yard with me on my journey since then. The rain lilies have moved with me through multiple homes and now live in my garden in Maine. Connection to plants, specifically connection to keeping things alive around you, are grounding and helpful to me. I’m not the most grounded person in the world and struggle with anxiety and generalized existential dread. Taking care of things, animals; plants, gardens, Art; keeps me present.

And to have rain lilies, we have to save the planet. It’s the only fight worth having right now. All war, all deforestation, and all development of undeveloped land must stop now. To save the planet is going to take much more than that. Love and light my friends.

May Sarton and Quotes

What is the point of quotes and reading other people’s journals and memoirs?

For me, it helps me to see perspective from someone else’s life experiences, and points of view. It’s also helpful to see glimpses of the world that once was while trying to imagine the world that’s going to be.

Living in the presence and present is crucial. All the beautys that May Sarton mentions here are things that we can preserve by fighting for our planet. Saving this planet, saving our only Home, is the number one issue.

Please do not support any politician that does not hold that as the most crucial ideal, because without a home, we don’t have a home.

Love and light my friends.

Friday thoughts for a world that is swirling.

I wanted to write about a few things that are on my mind. I'm uncomfortable giving my thoughts to the socials right now and this seems like the place where I should be writing these thoughts. Hopefully they will resonate on some level.

1. I've talked recently about how I believe the socials should be regulated as utility. One of the reasons I believe this is that they are a repository for powerful memories and interactions like this one. This should not be a thing that is owned and monetized by a deranged hoarder. This was posted five years ago today and the responses from my friends were beautiful and touched me this morning, five years later. I never saw my mom again and while there's much blame to go around, I'm not sure I've ever forgiven myself.

“Hello friends,

I just wanted to say a few words about my mom, Rosemary. She has been diagnosed with Covid and is in a Covid nursing facility. She is stable and she does not as yet have any symptoms. I’ve been my mother‘s caregiver for a few years now and do not generally talk about her health on social media, But I would like to ask a favor. My mother is a great believer in prayer and if you have ever been in her life in some capacity she has probably prayed for you. I would just ask that you send your prayers and wishes and magic and hope and light and whatever you have up to the universe for my mother. Thank you

Love and light, Christopher”

2, I speak in my videos on the socials about love, kindness, and empathy. These are easy words to say and they have certainly been demonized by certain currents in American society. They mean so much more than just the flip words and easy usage. To really understand, love, kindness, and empathy, is to look very hard at yourself and the world around you. I am trying to do that. I have a lot of righteous anger, and I do not understand cruelty, but I know that I'm capable of unkindness and I am working on it. So when I say, be kind to yourself and others, I mean it.

3. The use of AI utilities by corporations is destroying education and our planet. There's no way around this. I really don't know what the solution is.

Love and light on a Friday, my friends.

Thoughts on Fall 2021 Introduction to the Visual Arts

On this beautiful Thursday, I am grading my students final papers and projects. I am impressed by their thoughtful and creative projects and words. My students give me hope for the future. I continue to be humbled by what an honor it is to be a teacher. Teaching is so different now that I have become a talking head, but I still believe in the transformative power of education and specifically art education.

I spend much of my time sitting at a table, looking out the window at my garden and butterflies, listening to the birds, and working on my laptop. Life is never what you imagined it would be, but it can be beautiful. I am going to take a break from grading now and go check on the monarch and gulf fritillary caterpillars. Love and light my friends.

Thoughts at 50

Dear Friends,

I woke up this morning with the song “Black Boys on Mopeds” by Sinead O’Conner going through my head. Sadly the song is as relevant as it was the day I first heard it 30 years ago. Today on my birthday, I am trying to understand what happened yesterday in Washington D.C. I trying to make sense of why white people can do whatever they want in my country and folks of color are beaten and killed for just trying to live.

2021 has to be the year that we face uncomfortable truths. This is the year that we have to talk about racism, that we have to talk about poverty, that we have to talk about children that are hungry? Why do rich people get tax credits for their yachts and poor folks can’t deduct their bus fair? Why do poor folks go to jail and people, like the #notmypresidentman, break laws with no repercussions? Why is my city, Baton Rouge, more than 50% people of color and yet more than 90% of the wealth belongs to white people. Why are Rich countries getting all the vaccines and the poor countries are left to suffer. Why can Americas billionaires end world hunger, still be very, very rich, and yet don’t? Why the hell is there a picture of a slave owner on the dollar bill?

We should not be okay with the answers to these questions.. We need to feel so uncomfortable that we have no choice but to change. Children die of hunger in our world everyday. Hold that statement to your heart and live with it, we have no choice but to change. To quote a good man, enough is enough, is enough.

I realize that I must start with myself.

Are we ready?

Love and light and happiness to all my friends,

Christopher

Margaret Thatcher on TV

Shocked by the deaths that took place in Beijing

It seems strange that she should be offended

The same orders are given by her

I've said this before now

You said I was childish and you'll say it now

Remember what I told you

If they hated me they will hate you

England's not the mythical land of Madame George and roses

It's the home of police who kill black boys on mopeds

And I love my boy and that's why I'm leaving

I don't want him to be aware that there's

Any such thing as grieving

Young mother down at Smithfield

Five a.m., looking for food for her kids

In her arms she holds three cold babies

And the first word that they learned was please

These are dangerous days

To say what you feel is to dig your own grave

Remember what I told you

If you were of the world they would love you

England's not the mythical land of Madame George and roses

It's the home of police who kill blacks boys on mopeds

And I love my boy and that's why I'm leaving

I don't want him to be aware that there's

Any such thing as grieving

Sitting in a blue room, drinking black coffee

So it is day ten of our self Quarantine at Casa Rosemary, in the neighborhood where the sidewalk ends.

All is well, no one has a fever and we have plenty of food and wine and medicine and all sorts of important stuff. The dogs and the cats are very happy with having humans around all the time. I am enjoying walking and working in the garden everyday. I am currently obsessed with pollinator insects and trying to identify all the ones in our yard and that I see on my walks.

Dan still goes and works at the Meadow sometimes, but he’s alone there in the middle of a field, so quarantine is maintained?!?

Everyday was too much life and working and school and running, running, running and then it ended and one by one everything shut down and now we are on day ten. I needed the break, I think the whole planet did, why did it have to get so horrible and tragic for us to slow down? But I am learning to fill my days and try to put the existential dread in the back of my mind.

I made Pretzels for the first time in years, they were delicious.

We are turning the front yard into a meadow with native wildflowers and putting in a vegetable garden. Yesterday I put in a 10’ x 4’ bed with radishes, lettuces, and arugula. I put one of my gnomes to guard it, but I don’t think they bother the squirrels… #Radishes #Lettuce #Arugula #Gnome #gartenzwerg

Goodbye lawn.
